14 - 15 June 2014: Weekend hike to Salzburg (Untersberg)
Description: Leaving directly from the city of Salzburg (460m) a stunning walk along a river of mountain run-off awaits us. The ascent is steep and supported with wooden ladders and stairs to aid against erosion, but there are few drop-offs and cliffs.
After passing though the Rosittenbach we reach our overnight hut (Toni Lenz Huette, 1450m). If we arrive before 16:00 there is the option of a 45minute guided tour of a natural ice cave (15min walk from the hut). Well worth the 5EUR entrance fee.
Day 2 takes us up on the plateau, through tunnels blasted through the rockface (caution, wooden stairs and exposed faces). We cross the plateau and enjoy a pleasant hike down along the parallel valley.
Dinner is planned in Fuerstenbrunn or Glanegg before catching the bus back into Salzburg.
Ladders, steep rock stairs, areas secured with metal cables, and loose rock can be found along this hike
Due to the time required to cover the distance the pace will be relatively quick. The first day is almost continously uphill, covering 1000m in about 5 hours

Note:
I have purchased 3 sparschiene tickets at the reduced rate of 43€ for first come first serve. The earlier you register the cheaper the transporation will be. If you register later and require assistance in buying a train ticket I am more than happy to assit, however I cannot guarentee that the reduced rate will still be available. If you have other Oebb reduced fare opportunities (Vorteilskarte, etc.) you may be able to also find a reasonably priced ticket that is not a sparschiene.
Gear: Good shoes, rain jacket, head lamp, ‘Huetten schlafsac’ for the hut overnight, warm hat/gloves/socks, bug spray, sunscreen, snacks.
