20th May 2018: Bicycle trip Neusiedlersee

Corona: Please follow the recommendations of the alpine associations of Austria, English translation on ACV (Alpine Club Vienna)

Hike Leader: Class: Ca. 60 kms, mostly flat

Description: Lake Neusiedl is the largest endorheic lake (Steppensee) in Central Europe, straddling the Austro-Hungarian Border. Most of the lake is surrounded by reeds which serve as a habitat for wildlife thus making the lake an important resting place for migratory birds. We shall cycle along the East side of the lake to Illmitz, then by ferry to Mörbisch and from there cycle on the West side of the lake to the romantic village Rust. After lunch we have to climb a little hill up to the Steinbruch (quarry) of St. Margarethen, where the outdoor opera festival takes place in the summer. From there we cycle on flat bicycle paths to Eisenstadt, the capital of the Burgenland.

Route: Neusiedl – Podersdorf – Ilmitz – Mörbisch – Rust – St.Margarethen – Eisenstadt. The route is mainly flat, uphill only from Rust to St. Margarethen. Total is max. 60 km.
