Saturday 19 September 2020: Weichtalklamm and around Schneeberg

Corona: Please follow the recommendations of the alpine associations of Austria, English translation on ACV (Alpine Club Vienna)

Hike Leader: Class: /E 6

Description: scramble up a rocky gorge and skirt around Schneeberg on a less beaten route. We’ll leave Vienna early by local train to Payerbach. From there, a short bus ride to Weichtalhaus (547 m MSL) in the beautiful Höllental. The hike starts with an adventurous scramble up the Weichtalklamm, a rocky gorge equipped with chains, steps and ladders. Once reached Kienthalerhütte (1386 m MSL, http://www.kienthaler.at/) and the Fleischer Gedenkstein (1528 m MSL), we’ll continue with a quiet, panoramic ride in the woods behind Schneeberg, reaching the Edelweisshütte (1235 m MSL, http://www.edelweisshuette.at/) and then descending to Losenheim (860 m MSL). From there, bus (or walk) to Puchberg and train back to Vienna.

Route: Weichtalhaus – Kienthalerhütte – Fleischer Gedenkstein (1000 m up, 3.5 hours) – Edelweisshütte – Busstation Losenheim (600 m down, 2.5 hours)

Map: Freytag & Berndt-Wanderkarte Nr. 228, Wiener Hausbergen Schneeberg Rax

Meet: Saturday 19 September, Wien Hbf, 07 am (Train REX 1979, departing at 07:18)

Return: Saturday 19 September, bus from Losenheim at 15:16, arrival in Wien Hbf at 17:30. If we miss this connection, we’ll arrive in Vienna between 19:30 and 20:30.

Cost: train + bus fares (approx. 20 EUR, based on a group ticket fare, otherwise 10 EUR for bus + 15-30 EUR for train tickets)

Registration: by Wednesday, 16 September 2020. Maximum 6 participants.

Note: the Weichtalklamm requires absolutely dry weather (in alternative, we’ll take the Ferdinand-Mayer-Weg to Kienthalerhütte). Good hiking shoes are a must – the Weichtalklamm is always somewhat slippery. This is a hike on a secured trail that requires experience of similar hikes, head for heights and absolute surefootdness. Light ‘ferrata’ gloves and a helmet are a good idea.

This is a suistained-pace hike, to catch the 3 pm bus connection from Losenheim. Although there is the possibility of simple refreshments at the Edelweisshütte (arrival around 2 pm), it is highly recommended to bring water and snacks for a quick lunch on the go.
