Weekend 25/27 September: Grünau im Almtal - Kasberg (Upper Austria)

Description: Grünau im Almtal is a very attractive village in Upper Austria, at the Eastern edge of the Salzkammergut. At 1747m the Kasberg is the highest mountain in the immediate surroundings. Above the lake Almsee the rocky summits of the Dead Mountains provide for an impressive scenery. On a walk through the Cumberland Wildlife Park you can watch native game like red deer, bison, wolves, lynxes, Brown bears and others.

Route: Saturday: Hochberghaus (1132m) – Sepp-Huber Hütte – Kasberg (1747m) – Hochberghaus: C-5, surefootedness necessary. If you want to make it easier:
Hochberghaus (1132) – Almrunde via Kasbergalmhütte and Spitzplaneck, B-4.
Sunday: Walk through the Cumberland Game Park (2-3 hours), plus walk to and around Almsee, altogether A-5.

Meet: On Friday, 25/09, Westbahnhof (U3/U6), at 3:40 p.m., near the ticket machines. Train departs at 3:56, Change train at Wels, Arrival Gruenau at 6:54 p.m. There is another connection one hour later.
If we get enough cars it is also possible to do the trip in private cars. Please indicate upon registration whether you would drive and how many participants you can take.

Return: Sunday evening, around 8 p.m.

Cost: Ca. EUR 50.- for train ticket (with Vorteilscard), ca. EUR 20 for buses/taxi; 2 x overnight in B&B EUR 60.-; plus food and drinks, entrance fee to park, plus Hiking Club fee.

Registration: By Wednesday, 16 September, to Hike Leader; please indicate whether you would drive (ca. 250 km one way) and how many participants you can take.

Note: Bring proper mountaineering Equipment for the Kasberg (good boots, clothing appropriate to the weather, rainwear, snacks, drink. The Sunday walk can be done in Jogging shoes.
